Mestew’s Favorite Albums

At the request of Katy, a frequent commenter and citizen of Mestew Nation, we’ve decided to put our top 10 albums together. Some may surprise you, some you may say “what the h&@%?”, but hopefully you’ll like a few as well. And don’t be shy, after we drop our albums, you can give us a taste of yours. Ready to spin those records?
10. Michael Jackson -Thriller - This one seems obvious. It got America moving…
9. Fuel - Sunburn - The 1st CD I could listen to from start to finish and love every song.
8. The Who - Who’s Next? - Baba O’Riley… need I say more?
7. Oasis - (What’s the story) Morning Glory - The were dubbed the next Beatles. Well, that didn’t work out, but for a while they were my Wonderwall.
6. The Killers - Hot Fuss - The newest of my Top 10. These guys rock. I love their sound and this is their best CD to date. I look forward to more.
5. Eminem - The Slim Shady LP - Not a huge rap fan, but I loved this CD. I remember bumping in my 1986 Pontiac 6000 to this CD. Good times…
4. Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic - This album rocked with “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk this Way.” It’s one of the essential rock albums.
3. Van Halen - Van Halen - “Running with the Devil”, “Eruption”, “Jamie’s Cryin”, “Ain’t Talkin ‘Bout Love”, “You Really Got Me Now”… need I go on.
2. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds - I have always loved The Beach Boys and this is by far their best album. Rolling Stone Magazine even ranked it as their number 2 of all time. This band changed the way music sounded with songs like “Sloop John B”, “Wouldn’t it be Nice”, and “God Only Knows.” To me, it’s a sure-thing classic.
1. Guns ‘N Roses - Appetite for Destruction - How could I not make this my number 1? If GNR could have held it together mentally, we would be talking about them as one of the greatest bands ever. Still, even with their relatively short career together, they created one of music’s masterpieces. In my mind, it can’t be beat.
10. Kanye West, Late Registration - There was a time when “Gold Digger” would come on in the bar and the friends I was with would come looking for me… those were the days when I went out to the bar.
9. Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack - Best soundtrack ever, though Rocky IV came close. And to think I’d listen to “Night Fever” or “More Than a Woman” to get me pumped up more times than “Eye of the Tiger.”
8. Jack Johnson, In Between Dreams - You have to be in a certain mood to like Jack Johnson… or be a wanna-be hippy. “Better Together” and “Do You Remember” are amazing songs.
7. Motley Crue, Greatest Hits - Some people don’t consider Greatest Hits albums real albums. Those are the same people that waste a lot of money listening to crap songs on an album they bought maybe one or two hits. Anyway… I was really turned onto Motley Crue my freshman year of college and listened to it all the time. Maybe it was their VH1 Behind the Music but every song on this disc rocks.
6. Lionel Richie, Greatest Hits - Another Best Of album, but Lionel can make any mood a positive one. He even makes stalking chicks a smooth and cool thing to do. “S’why I’m easy ….. easy like Sunday mornin’”
5. Beatles, Abbey Road - Of all the things the Fab Four put together, there are just too many great songs on both sides of this record. Sometimes when I drive, I love to blast “Golden Slumbers” and sing along. Not many people know that… probably not any before now.
4. Guns ‘N Roses, Appetite for Destruction - This was Estew’s #1 and it could have easily been mine. Just one of those discs that grabs you from beginning to end. If you said “Welcome to the Jungle” doesn’t get you the least bit pumped, then I’d call you a liar.
3. Van Halen, Van Halen - Again, another pick Estew and I share… but we are Van Halen and David Lee Roth fans. This was the first album I loved every song on… well, not Atomic Punk, but everything else is great. Little Dreamer is easily their most underrated song, IMO.
2. Rolling Stones, Rewind - This was the first thing I ever bought online. I was in high school and the internet was just a toddler. I researched various Stones albums and thought, “damn, Rewind has EVERYTHING and I can’t find it anywhere!” Check it out sometime, it does have everything. Hot Rocks is another dandy.
1. Eric Clapton, Cream of Clapton - This is the cream of the crop for sure. All of the best stuff Clapton’s put together, from his days with Cream on up to his solo career. And none of that soft, recent crap too. You know, things like “My Father’s Eyes” and “Change the World.” I’m talking about the best of the best like “Sunshine of Your Love,” “Bell Bottom Blues” and the good version of “Layla.”
Ok, Nation, it’s your turn.

M.E. great decision including SNF soundtrack. For me it was a toss up between that and Dirty Dancing. I’ll also throw out there Dazed and Confused. I can’t believe you guys left out Metallica-Metallica, Jock Jams Volume 2, DMX-FOMFBOMB, Beastie Boys-License to Ill, and Booty Mix 69.

What? No Snoop on anyone’s list? Doggystyle is an album that you can listen to virtually every song and enjoy! I have friends that will still rewind the intro where the guy is peeing over and over for shits and giggles. I would like to second Craig’s vote for Journey’s Greatest Hits and throw some Eddie Money at you. I found his greatest hits at Walmart while I was getting an oil change and didn’t realize the true volume of his work; there are about five songs on there that are worth singing aloud when you have friends in the car. Also curious about the two #1 votes for Counting Crows, I guess I thought “Mr. Jones and Me” was their only hit? Somebody tell me what makes that album so great…

ONLY HIT!??!?!?! “Mr. Jones” “Rain King” “Round Here” and “Omaha” were all singles from that album alone.
Adam Duritz’s writing is stellar throughout, as he convey’s a sadness through lyrics that is rarely seen in modern music: from Round Here:”I walk into a room like a ghost into a fog, where no one notices the contrast of white on white” and from Raining in Baltimore: “These train conversations keep passing me by, and I dont have nothing to say. You get what you pay for, but just had no, intention of living this way”
I’m telling you - this album is epic….give it a shot, you won’t be disappointed. Also, Recovering the Satellites, the bands 2nd album, is also very well done.

Not in any particular order, nor any particular album:
1. ANYTHING Sinatra….lyrics you can understand. His phrasing, eunciation, and treatment of a song stands alone in the history of recorded music.
2. The Beatles…’nuff said. They changed the way we listened to rock and roll. John Lennon…the musical genius of his generation and every one that followed.
3. Creedence Clearwater Revival. John Fogarty. Helped get me thru the late 60’s.
4. Alan Jackson…king of the class of ‘93. Everthing he does is pure country.
5. Glenn Miller…defined Big Band. Timeless.
6. The Bee Gees. Yeah, I’m a fan.
7. Dean Martin…the definition of laid back.
8. Perry Como….clean, straight, and 50’s traditional all the way.
9. Janis Joplin…Big Brother and the Holding Company remains one of my all-time favorite albums. Pure Texas soul.
10. Hank Williams…SR. The standard to which every country singer worth his or her salt aspires to.
