Futility Has a Name: The Detroit Lions

I am a lifelong Lions fan. Up until this year, I have been OK saying that. Yes, I know the Detroit Lions have been very bad for a very long time, but it is finally starting to effect me. Last years 0-16 campaign wasn’t enough to take me out. The years of Joey Harrington, Charlie Batch, Andre Ware, Rodney Peete, Erik Kramer and Scott Mitchell couldn’t touch my Lion pride. Hell, I even made it through the 4 M’s (Morningwhig, Mariucci, Marinelli and Millen). Now, though, it has become more than I can bare. I fear that this town is making great players (Stafford, C. Johnson, Kevin smith, Louis Delmas, Julian Peterson, etc) into the sub-mediocre punch line of Stewart Scott and his goons. There is just something about Detroit that brings out the loser in everyone. Politicians, baseball players, Casino builders, car manufacturers, city planners, business men…everyone. Hell, even the Detroit bums are lacking that certain pizazz that make the hearts of America bleed. After watching another terrible defeat at the hands of a less talented opponent (Seattle this time), I am now convinced that this team will never win anything. Except for the first pick in the 2010 NFL draft, of course! I may be nearing the end of my days as a Lion man.

When are the Lions going to be embraced for what they’re doing? I don’t understand why the Cubs are “lovable losers” year after year – yet they aren’t even the midwest’s most futile sports team! I want to see some pink Lions hats and beach balls at Ford Field, and lets love the Lions for what they are; a reason to drink with your friends and watch some really funny entertainment!

1st let me say it is about time you guys are back, and I am a little upset I did not get a notice, though I may have missed them due to not paying attention. Now to the Lions, I stopped routing for the Lions about 5 years ago. Even before I moved to Atlanta. I have never been so frustrated watching a team and just had to write them off so I could enjoy my Sundays. I am not looking forward to Thanksgiving and seeing them embarrased once again on National TV. I hope for their sake they get the #1 draft pick in 2010. Dang it pick an O-Lineman or a talented stud on D!

I’m with Justin here. Look, when I moved to Washington State, one of the perks was leaving the Lion’s behind. In Seattle, there were some great moments that have definitley faded over time. I have tickets to go to the 49ers game in a couple of weeks and I am still excited, even though they suck. My point is, thought they have sucked for a very long time, at least there is the option to go see them get manhandled. Think if you lived in Southern Idaho, or Kansas, or anyother state with no team. Now, if the Lions left what are we, Bears fans? HELL NO!! I say it now. I am and forever will be a lions fan, and when the day comes they start winning, I will be able to enjoy it even more.

P.S. Good to have you guys back.

Oh, and yes I realize Kansas has an NFL team. I just like hating on them.
