Winter Olympics start tomorrow

This morning while listening to Mike & Mike, they brought up the fact that the Winter Olympics start tomorrow. So what did I do? I said “oh” and went back to finding what I was going to wear for the day (FWIW, I chose my blue, horizontal-striped sweater thing and khakis). That was the extent of my excitement. I try to think of what Winter Olympic sports grab my attention… none. I remember the days of Kristi Yamaguchi and Nancy Kerrigan, Bonnie Blair and Dan Jansen on the speed skates, …

Stop complaining about Super Bowl commercials

“Eh, there were a couple good ones but overall, they weren’t as good as in year’s past.”
I’d have to think 9 out of 10 Super Bowl watchers muttered something like this after watching the highly anticipated ads from the big game. Now think back. You’ve probably said this the past few years too. Why? Because you’ve set the bar too high. When you think of year’s past, you’re thinking of every single Super Bowl commercial you can remember from a span of years. So pretty much, you’re comparing one year’s …

Local model, Bo Pratt

When citizens of Mestew Nation impress us, we love to give out some positive PR. Today, I’m happy to share our man, Bo Pratt, is in the latest Pepsi campaign. He’s making his way up the ladder, starting with some collegiate ads a while back, to the cover of the MTA Sport version of the “Perfect Pushup” and now going international with Pepsi. Look for him at around the :28 second mark. He’s the dude in the bottom, right corner – then moves to the middle, right square a second …

It’s a Dog Tweets Dog World

So who out there is following Mestew on Twitter? If you’re not, you should be! And if Mestew had a dog, you could potentially follow that bitch on Twitter too. That’s right, Mattel has invented a great device for dogs to wear that sends out Tweets when the dog barks or moves. It’s called Puppy Tweets and I’m sure they’re flying off the shelves at your favorite pet store. When I read this story for the first time, the first thing that went through my head was, “it’s about time!” …

Local artist, Lukas Pederson

I had the pleasure of meeting Lukas last summer in the Kalamazoo Wiffle League. While talking after games one evening, he had mentioned that he played some local guitar gigs. One of which was a reoccurring session Wednesday nights at University Roadhouse. So, being the supportive friend that I am, I ventured over to give him a listen. Now Lukas is a star on the Wiffle ball field, but that’s nothing compared to his sound on the stage. He’s easily the best solo act I can remember hearing. He mixes in requests …

Fantasy Baseball

For those of you that know me, y’all know I’m a baller… fantasy baller! Yes, I’m a huge fan of the show The League and I probably laughed the hardest in Knocked Up when Paul Rudd gets busted at a fantasy baseball draft. I accept the fact that what existed of my coolness may have taken a huge hit with these admissions, but I am who I am. Fantasy baseball is within sight and one of my two leagues has just started its draft. Oh by the way, if fantasy …

Free at last, free at last

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day, I wanted to share this article from the Detroit Free Press written by Zlati Meyer. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s last visit to the state of Michigan was just three weeks before he was shot in Memphis. He gave a speech at Grosse Point High School, March 14, 1968, in front of 2,700 people. The article touches on what Dr. King and the community both went through prior to and during his speech titled “The Other America.” Check it out.

McGwire used ‘roids and I don’t care

According to an AP article – Mark McGwire finally came clean Monday, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball’s home run record in 1998. McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade. “I wish I had never touched steroids,” McGwire said in a statement. “It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era.” (rest of the article)
Some of you know where I …

Mayweather vs Pacquiao is off, as expected

The 40-0 Floyd Mayweather will not fight Manny Pacquiao after all. The March 13th bout is now canceled because of a disagreement over drug testing… or that’s what Floyd wants us to believe. Not too long ago, Floyd said he wanted Manny’s blood tested before the fight. You know, to protect the pureness that the sport of boxing is known for. Manny said no, but he’ll take the urine tests. His reasoning seemed legit to me: piss tests are easier to beat drawing blood a month away from the fight …

College Basketball Algebra

Let’s take a trip back to Algebra 101, Mestew Nation. Here’s something you’d probably see on your first quiz:
If A > B, and B > C, then:
a. A = C
b. A > C
c. A < C
d. Is it too late to drop the course?
If you answered b. A > C, then you’re well on your way to passing this class. Now instead of using letters, let’s use an actual story problem. Consider the same equation, but plug in the following college basketball teams for the following variables:
A – Western Michigan …
