What’s Next for the Detroit Lions?

Never before has an NFL football team finished their season with an 0-16 record. This year, the Detroit Lions have managed to make history. Growing up, I was never a huge NFL fan. And if I had to pick a team, it was Dan Marino’s Miami Dolphins. There was a time when I could have worn a different Marino jersey or Dolphins’ shirt for each day of the week. Funny how I never liked the Lions for two particular reasons: 1) too many people I didn’t like loved the Lions (also why I’m not a Red Wings fan); and 2) the passing game is far more entertaining to me than the running game. Barry Sanders was the Lions growing up and that just didn’t interest me.

Why am I a Lions fan now more than ever? It actually started a few years ago. I was able to score two tickets to the Lions vs. Bears game at Soldier Field that were two rows behind Detroit’s bench. I can actually pinpoint the play that sparked my Lions fandom - Roy Williams was under-thrown near the sideline and reached over the defensive back with one arm to reel in the catch - and it happened right in front of me. Since then, I’ve gone to most of the Lions vs. Bears games played each year. So now I have a team and they are the worst in NFL history. So what can the Lions do to make them watchable again? Well, this is my idea… (more…)

Big Baby is Right

How could a 260+ pound man be reduced to tears, you ask? Well, Glen “Big Baby” Davis can tell you. He cries when teammates yell at him. This video sure does make his nickname sound like shear prophecy.

Now, tell us what makes you cry.

A Few More Sports Blunders

This week has been one of the craziest in terms sports stories. First we had Plaxico and his sweatpants gun. Then the BCS reared its ugly head again. Not to be outdone, Sean Avery reminded us all that he was a complete idiot. As much as we at Mestew love to share all the stories, the sports world has just had too many mishaps for us this week to keep up. Here are a few we missed. (more…)

Know How You Boys Like ‘em Sloppy

In a week where we’ve seen athletes get suspended for fighting the law and taking a shot in the dark, people say these types of things come in threes. Well, I present to you Sean Avery, the third athlete to be suspended this week AND featured on Mestew. Though the other reasons for suspension were warranted (felonies), Avery’s was not. Of all the things professional athletes have said and done worthy of missing work without pay, the NHL suspends a guy for making a comment about his ex-girlfriend. He didn’t even use a bad word! Tough break, Sean.

Stick to Catching Balls, Not Dropping Glocks

By now, you’ve probably heard about the “Plaxico Burress shot himself” scandal. Yes, the outstanding NFL wide-receiver who makes a living catching balls dropped his concealed gun at NYC nightclub and accidentally shot himself. I’m sure between now and Christmas, we’ll be hearing more and more details about the prosecution, attempted cover-up, Antonio Pierce as a poor-man’s Al Cowlings, and much more. But this is the thing that I want to know… (more…)
