Kevin Smith is known for his movies and love of all things nerd. His successful string of films include some of my all-time favorites: “Clerks”, “Mallrats”, and “Dogma.” All of this is to say nothing of his keen acting ability that has been put on display in unforgettable classics such as “Live Free or Die Hard.” OK, I was kidding there. Anyway, his acting chops did not avail him recently when he tried to convince a Southwest Airline flight crew that he was indeed not too fat to ride their ride. That’s right, Smith got kicked off a plane for being too fat. Southwest officials claimed that his weight was too much for one seat to bare. He was deboarded…in front of all the slack eyed on-lookers…and asked to buy 2 seats next time. Apparently, this weight issue not only causes discomfort to the passenger sitting next to the obese passenger, but it also creates a safety hazard.

As a pretty bug guy myself, I cannot imagine how fat you would have to be to not fit in your airplane sit properly. I fit easily…but I guess I am not weighing in at the same scale rocking total that this guy is. He is huge…and getting huger (is that a word?) What happened to this guy? Too much potato chips and World of Warcraft? Not enough nerd fueled sex? Whatever it is, it has to be fixed! It is ruining traveling for too many unsuspecting thin passengers.

Now, Smith is crying foul as he unleashes a hate filled “down with southwest” barrage on his Twitter page. He claims he fit in the seat fine and it was a renegade “Clerks hating” airline employee that had him setup. I am serious…this is Smith’s claim. First of all, nobody hates Clerks…do they? Secondly, I doubt that chintzy plan could ever be pulled off. Thirdly, if that was the guys plan and he did pull it off, what a movie that would make!

This morning while listening to Mike & Mike, they brought up the fact that the Winter Olympics start tomorrow. So what did I do? I said “oh” and went back to finding what I was going to wear for the day (FWIW, I chose my blue, horizontal-striped sweater thing and khakis). That was the extent of my excitement. I try to think of what Winter Olympic sports grab my attention… none. I remember the days of Kristi Yamaguchi and Nancy Kerrigan, Bonnie Blair and Dan Jansen on the speed skates, and… uh… oh, who could forget when Austrian alpine skier Petra Kronberger won both the combined event and the slalom?! Oh yeah, everyone. I had to look that up on Wikipedia just to find another Winter Olympics moment.

Let’s face it, Mestew Nation, the Winter Olympics are crap. The only Olympic athletes you can name this year are Apolo Ohno and Shaun White. There’s no figure skating drama, no speed skating rivalry, and no war opponents are fielding teams… though wouldn’t it be sweet to cheer if the U.S. took gold over Iraq in curling! Hey NBC, here’s a tip to make this year’s viewing experience better: air more curling and more of that event where the skiers carry shot guns. America LOVES sports that either A) so easy, anyone could do it; or B) involve weapons (example: the NBA).

Ok, you’ve heard my opinion. Let’s hear yours. If you want to play the safe way, just vote in the poll. But if you want to be leader in Mestew Nation, leave us a comment. If you do, you’ll be a gold medalist in my eyes.

Now think back. You’ve probably said this the past few years too. Why? Because you’ve set the bar too high. When you think of year’s past, you’re thinking of every single Super Bowl commercial you can remember from a span of years. So pretty much, you’re comparing one year’s commercials to a compilation of favorites that could possibly span decades. Remember that “cat herding” Super Bowl commercial, that one was a favorite… from 2000. Without using Google, can you remember any others from 2000? Exactly.

Ten years from now, you’re probably going to remember one commercial from this past weekend. And you’re also going to say to everyone as you walk out the front door of your party, “they just weren’t as good as they were in year’s past, ya know? Remember the classics like Betty White getting drilled?”

With all the NFL playoff buzz, we have been inundated with questions of “who is the best QB of all time.” Is it Favre? Manning? Brady? Perhaps a throwback like Unitas or Tarkenton? How about Elway, Marino, or Montana? Enough is enough! If you wanted to kn ow, you should have just asked me from the beginning. Here is how I see it…

First off, let me explain that I will not rank anyone that didn’t play during my lifetimeof memory. I didn’t see them play (or was too young to remember), so they are out!

10. Drew Brees- This guy is an underrated passing machine. Yardage wise, it doesn’t get any better than him.

9. Troy Aikman- Led a dynasty. Not particularly fantastic, but has a couple rings…which is what it is all about.

8. Kurt Warner- Grocery boy has got himself a Super Bowl ring and is a former MVP. Again, an underrated yardage machine.

7. Steve Young- He managed to not skip a beat after the amazing Joe Montana retired. He was what Aaron Rodgers was suppose to be.

6. Dan Marino- This guy never managed a Super Bowl, but was an MVP. For a long time, he also owned almost every record.

5. Brett Favre- Let’s hear the boo’s cheese heads and Vikes fans. Oh wait, you both hate this guy now. Well, his talent is undeniable. The gunslinger is a legend. Now please quit!

4. Joe Montana- Growing up, this guy was the icon. He has the rings to prove it.

3. John Elway- He may belong in the number 2 slot…but I just couldn’t do it. He was the best dual threat guy on this list. He didn’t look to be a runner, but his opponents would argue otherwise. He finally got his ring at the end of a Hall of Fame career.

2. Tom Brady- Sure, he is the recipient of a great system and Top 3 of all-time head coach. Yes, he has had an awesome o-line and a good defense. Oh, and for the last few seasons Randy Moss and Wes Welker haven’t been too bad either. However, he is a 1st ballot Hall of Famer that can boast a lot of rings and insane stats. Not bad for Drew Henson’s (who???)former back up.

1. Peyton Manning- For me, this is a no-brainer. Nobody has as much control over a team as he does. The way he commands the huddle and line of scrimmage is amazing. Hell, he could probably get away with firing the coach if he wanted to. Up until now, he has gathered some pretty significant jewelery and his trophy case is probably getting a little full. My guess, he will be adding to that come Super Bowl Sunday.

There is the truth, Nation. Your thoughts?

I wish Spot had his own way to Tweet without using MY computer… well now he does. For $30, you can buy your dog this innovative product.

Another year of NFL football down, and now we approach another enthralling Pro Bowl game! The game that no one cares about, including avid football fans. Each year the game becomes more and more pointless. More and more players continue to turn it down, while the NFL tries to spin the event into comparable money making All-star venues of other professional sports. But the Pro Bowl lacks many key features that make it even marginally interesting. Basketball has the Dunk Contest, Baseball has Homerun derby, hell even PBA has Trick Shots! But the NFL’s attempt at a fun contest, skills challenge, fails to even peak the interest of the fans in the stadium let alone at home viewers. Is there anything they can do to make it more interesting? Nope. Football isn’t flashy and the plays that fans love are bone jarring tackles (like the one Warner suffered in the playoffs versus N.O.) and large break away plays. Neither of those are something you will see in a meaningless exhibition game and we can’t blame the players! The Pro Bowl is nothing more then a glorified preseason game. They can move the game before the Super Bowl, after the Super Bowl, to Florida or even to Argentina, yet the result is the same!

So, being the kind of guy I am, I offer you 5 ideas of other things that will be more entertaining and can be watched this coming Sunday instead of trying to choke down another NFL Pro Bowl!

5.) Download the 8th Annual MTV Rock ‘n Jock Softball Challenge, featuring everyone’s favorite LA Dodger (well at the time, 1997 mind you) Mike Piazza!

4.) FX: Super Bad. This movie is an all-time great, but it’s nearly worthless with regular TV censorship. But hey, at least you won’t be watching the AFC and NFC play 2 hand touch!

3.) ESPN Deportes: Dutch Football. Not sure what this going to be, it’s a safe guess that it’s better then the Pro Bowl! Just be sure to put the TV on Mute, unless you speak Spanish!

2.) Nickelodeon: Sponge Bob. Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

1.) MTV: Teen Mom. This show is a train wreck, but it’s so much fun to watch!

I had the pleasure of meeting Lukas last summer in the Kalamazoo Wiffle League. While talking after games one evening, he had mentioned that he played some local guitar gigs. One of which was a reoccurring session Wednesday nights at University Roadhouse. So, being the supportive friend that I am, I ventured over to give him a listen.
Now Lukas is a star on the Wiffle ball field, but that’s nothing compared to his sound on the stage. He’s easily the best solo act I can remember hearing. He mixes in requests (he does a great TLC Waterfalls), some of his own stuff, and occasionally allows a guest singer or strummer. He now has his own webpage so you can follow event dates, sample some of his music, and learn about the man himself. Check it out at LukasPederson.com and since he’s a Friend of Mestew, his link will always be in our sidebar on the site.

Yes, I’m a huge fan of the show The League and I probably laughed the hardest in Knocked Up when Paul Rudd gets busted at a fantasy baseball draft. I accept the fact that what existed of my coolness may have taken a huge hit with these admissions, but I am who I am. Fantasy baseball is within sight and one of my two leagues has just started its draft. Oh by the way, if fantasy sports bore you, you can stop reading now and check out one of my other articles. To keep the two leagues separate, here’s a quick breakdown of the two so you can keep them separate for future reference:

The “Coastal” League
15 teams, 5×5 roto scoring
New keeper league (5 major and 5 minor players)

The “Springs” League
16 teams, H2H points scoring
Existing keeper league (5 major and 5 minor players)

This article is about the start of the Coastal league. I’ve joined in with a bunch of experts I don’t know with the intension of feeling like an expert myself. The draft is taking place via email/message board and should be finished near the start of Spring Training games. To get the discussion started, here’s a poll:

Through 3 Rounds, which team is looking the best thus far?(trends)

Any clear cut leaders? Anyone that you see and automatically scratch your head, wondering what they were thinking? Let’s hear it, amateur baseball analysts.
