Miles for Macha

Greg Krause, right, is running “Miles for Macha”

We like to point out great causes headed up by members of Mestew Nation every chance we get. My good friend Greg Krause is raising money for the elementary school his parents’ founded in the village of Macha, Zambia (Africa). Greg will be running the New York Marathon this November and has already received international exposure by selling a sponsorship on eBay. Green Pharmaceuticals, a Camarillo, California company, purchased the sponsorship for $9,000. In return, Greg will be running all 26.2 miles of the marathon in pajamas that read “I’m In Bed With SnoreStop,” as SnoreStop is the pharmaceutical company’s lead product. For more information on his Miles for Macha, check out any of the links below. Good luck, Greg!

Another Shameful Day in the “D”

Kwame is a man about town

Michigan, home of the auto industry and high unemployment, must now heal from yet another black eye. As usual, it has been provided by its biggest city, Detroit. As if the Lions weren’t bad enough, now they are forced to deal with political insanity. The city of boarded up factories and plummeting property values has just thrown its Mayor, the not so honorable Kwame Kilpatrick, into jail for breaking the terms of his bond for an ongoing perjury and obstruction case. Apparently you are not allowed to leave the country when out on bond. Who knew? Well, Kwame didn’t when he traveled for “official city business” to Canada last month. How come I think “official city business” is code word for running drugs or trafficking women or some other ridiculous felony? It could be because this guy reminds me more of Suge Knight then a respectable policy maker. Kilpatrick will go on trial soon for lying under oath when being questioned by authorities regarding inappropriate relationships and conversations between him and a subordinate. In short, he was banging a girl that worked for him while he was married. Other allegations of fraud and mishandling of city funds have also marred this loser’s administration. Detroit has been the laughing stock of the nation for years with its high crime rates and extreme poverty. Now we can add governmental corruption to our pride list. At least we still have the Red Wings!

The Favre Saga Might Actually Be Over

Brett Favre is unhappy

If you have paid any attention to sports news over the past month, you’ve surely heard about Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers. If you’ve been living in a cave, I’ll give you a brief overview: every year for the past couple years Brett Favre says he’s going to retire but comes back; this past year he really did retire; a Minnesota Vikings coach tells Brett he should ask the Packers to release his rights so he can play for him; Brett asks and the Packers say no; Brett whines in public; the Packers say, “you can be our backup QB but we’re not trading you to our division rival;” Brett feels he’s already done enough damage to the Packers and agrees to be traded elsewhere.

Ok, now that we’re all caught up, he was finally traded last night to the New York Jets. It’s an interesting deal too. According to NFL.com, the Packers will receive a fourth-round draft pick in 2009 for Favre. The selection would turn into a third-rounder if he plays in 50 percent of the plays this season, a second-rounder if he plays in 70 percent and the Jets make the playoffs, or a first-round pick if he plays in 80 percent and the Jets make it to the Super Bowl.

Caleb Campbell and the Army Blunder

Caleb Campbell sitting with ESPN at the 2008 NFL Draft

Every now and then, I read an article by Rick Reilly and think, “this man is dead on.” I just read another one. This one is his take on Caleb Campbell, 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and former Detroit Lion. For those of you that don’t know or haven’t heard of Caleb, he was the Army football standout that was drafted by the Detroit Lions this past April. The Army had a rule that if you were drafted by the NFL, you could go on and live your football dream but work as a recruiter during the off-season. It was a way to boost the image of the Army and boost recruiting by having a pro athlete endorser. Well, guess what happened the day before training camp kicked off? I’ll let Rick tell you…

2nd Lt. Caleb Campbell is good enough for the NFL.
But that’s not enough for the Army.
